About this Product
DURALUX is the highest quality marine coating available - Marine Spar Varnish is a super clear varnish for exterior and interior use on new or previously varnished surfaces subject to abuse from parching sun, fresh or salt water, severe weather conditions or abrasions.
SURFACE PREPARATION
- The surface to be varnished must be free of dirt, dust, mildew, wax, oil and other foreign matter, and must be totally dry.
- New Or Unfinished Wood
- Sand smooth any rough areas on the surface. Sand in the direction of the wood grain using fine sandpaper (180-320 grit). On open grained wood such as oak, ash, etc. the use of a paste filler is recommended for a smoother finish. A first coat of MARINE SPAR VARNISH may be used as a sealer coat. Allow to dry overnight before re-coating.
- Previously Varnished Surfaces
- MARINE SPAR VARNISH can be applied directly over old varnish as long as it is in sound condition and adhering well. Dull any existing gloss by lightly sanding or by using a liquid de-glosser. If the old finish is badly marred, cracked or peeling, remove by sanding or using a chemical paint and varnish stripper. Carefully wash off all traces of stripper and any dust using a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. Spot seal any bare areas using MARINE SPAR VANISH as the sealer. Allow to dry overnight before re-coating.
- Lead Warning!
- If you scrape, sand or remove old paint from any surface, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Carefully clean up with a wet mop or HEPA vacuum.
